WILLIAM DAVIES
« on: Tuesday 10 July 18 14:44 BST (UK) »
Older photograph believed to be William Davies, born 1838 St. Martins, Shropshire, UK, possibly taken  1859. The later is a tin-type and is believed to be him. He disappeared from England and could have gone to the USA or Scotland, probably the latter, maybe near Edinborough.

The 1st. is an 1880's reprint but the original looks to be an 1850'/60's ambrotype.
The 2nd. if it's a UK tintype is going to be mid 1860's -mid 1870's. & so the age difference looks right, however they look different around the mouth so not convinced.

Thought a cleaned up photo might make it easier.

Just my two cents, I'd say the ears are a dead giveaway that these are not the same people.
I just like to do photo restores.

I'm not convinced that they are the same person...hair partings rarely change throughout life and these two have totally different hairlines and facial features.

Agree with the others - unlikely to be the same person.

Will have a look at my St Martins records tomorrow. I  have a lot of rellies from there. I think Carol has some too - Selattyn, etc.

Were his parents Evan and Jane or Evan and Mary, by any chance?

As a first-time user I'm impressed by the speed and helpfulness of the responses. The cleaned-up photo is much appreciated - I have another I'll be sending. I'm still clinging to the possibility they're the same person as the age seems to be right. In the first photograph William is young and full of the joys of life. Later his wife left him and he disappeared obviously suffering a considerable trauma. The later photograph seems to be of an unhappy man with drawn features with a receding hairline. It was once suggested it might be one of the ghoulish Victorian post-mortem photographs, but I don't think so. Pity that facial recognition isn't available.
William was the son of Evan Davies and Mary, née Woolam. I've been looking for Evan's parents, but they're not in St. Martins PR. Evan was a lay preacher and must have been non-conformist. His parents might have been a William and Ann, but I can't be sure.
I'm interested in the names' interests mentioned. My mother-in law's birth name was Isabella Johnston Bee, born Galashiels, 1896. Her mother was Mary Brown, born Walnockhead, Dumfries, the daughter of Thomas Brown and Isabella Johnston.
I also have a connection to Jack Perry, born 1921, Nantwich.
Many thanks to all,
Don Tomkinson

I wouldn't put too much store in how he looked, nobody smiled when they had their picture taken.
There are no similarities between the 2.
