(*Completed with thanks*)Kirkcudbright Poorhouse records.
« on: Wednesday 11 July 18 22:09 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Can anyone advise me if the above records are kept at the Ewart Library, Dumfries?  Looking for information on a John Watt, who died in the poorhouse in 1857.  He was born c1790 and believed he was married to 1. Janet Maxwell and 2. Agnes McConchie.  I am hoping he and Janet Maxwell are my 3x great grandparents.  Yes, the dreaded brick wall.

Thanks.

Tom

Thanks Colin,

My 2x great grandmother was Margaret Watt, born c1815 at Anwoth, died 1885 at Girthon. Parents on death records were John Watt and ? Maxwell.  Now found a Grace Watt born c1812 at Anwoth died 1869 at Moniaive. She had married a William Muirhead in 1843 at Glencairn Parish.  Her death record gives parents as John Watt and Janet Maxwell.  Cannot find any records of births for Grace and Margaret.  Just hoping This John Watt has some info on the poorhouse records.

I have a death record in Ayrshire from 1857 which notes all the members of the family.
So I wondered if John's death certificate might give more information, as some of the early ones did?

According to SP Anwoth birth records are complete from 1727 but no Watts records.

Hi Colin,

Nothing on the death record other than what was required.  Informant was the inspector of the poor. He was aged 67, a widow, parents details not known. Buried in St Cuthberts Churchyard.

Other than Jane's baptism in 1820, the family does not seem to be recorded..
I've even tried checking post 1855 deaths on the hope of other family members being found.  No luck, so far.

Hi.  Kirkcudbrightshire Poor Records (at least those that have survived) are held in The Ewart library, Dumfries. To the previous posting, the Archive Centre in Burns Street closed some years ago and is now housed within the Ewart Library in Catherinse Street, Dumfries.

Thanks Ian - I did wonder as I knew the Archives had moved but as it was a link on the Workhouse site, I assumed they would know  :)

Add - However, it does state what records are available:

Thanks to all.  Appears to be the end of that line of enquiry.
