Edward Slavin/Slevin and Margaret McBride of Armagh
« on: Thursday 12 July 18 02:14 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to trace my 4th great grandparents, Edward Slavin/Slevin and Margaret McBride, in Armagh before they emigrated to Australia in 1857 onboard the 'Echunga'.

On his death certificate in 1879, Edward's parents are listed as "Edward Patrick Slavin - labourer" and "Mother's name not known beyond Margaret". Edward was recorded as being 47 years old in 1879 and being born in Armagh, Ireland (c. 1832). The passenger list for the 'Echunga' has him born c. 1831 from Armagh.

On her death certificate in 1866, Margaret's parents are listed as "Francis and Margaret McBride". She was recorded as being 38 years old in 1866 and being born in Armagh, Ireland (c. 1828). However on the passenger list for the 'Echunga' she was recorded as being 23 years old (c. 1834) from Armagh, she's also listed as Mary A Slevin.

I've been able to find Edward and Margaret's marriage on 28th Jan 1857 in Armagh (image of marriage record attached). The 'Echunga' sailed from Liverpool on 30th May 1857.

I haven't been able to find any records of birth that seem to fit for them so I've hit a bit of a brick wall. I was hoping someone here might know something about these families that may shed some light.

Thanks in advance!
Lee

There is an Edward Slavin in 1832 in the Freeholder Records available at PRONI listed in Drumart:

The earlier record for seemingly the same guy (1816-1817) has the name spelled as Slevin -- a tenant of Lord Dungannon:

Hey - thanks for helping me out!
Drumart could be a good lead, haven't come across this Edward yet. Hopefully can make the connection.

BDM VIC birth
1858 / 4462 SLEAVIN  Mary parents Edward / Margret (Mcbride)   Bruthen Creek

BDM VIC marriage
1883 / 539 SLAVIN  Mary Ann  m.  PICKERING William David

BDM VIC deaths
1923 / 3505 SLAVIN  Margaret parents SLAVIN Edward / Mary (Mcbride)
died St Kilda  age 57

1939 / 10084 PICKERING  Mary Ann  parents SLAVIN Edward / Margaret (Mcbride)
born Bruthen Victoria  died Collingwood  age 80

When Margaret SLAVIN dies, 1866, does husband Edward marry again? If not, who looks after her small children?. This might lead to extended family already living in Victoria.
