Missing parents info in WA BDM index - LEVITT
« on: Thursday 12 July 18 03:12 BST (UK) »
I was surprised to find the following birth and death in the WA BDM indexes:

birth Levitt  Frank  Male     Williams  86  1918
death Levitt  Frank  Male      Perth  188  1927

with no mother or father listed. Is this unusual? Would the actual certificates have this information?

I don't know the answer, but I have just read the following on their website:

Please note that some entries in Open Era records may cause offence. In order to avoid causing offence, the copy you receive may be redacted unless you specifically ask for an un-redacted copy. By asking for an un-redacted copy, you accept that the copy you receive could contain words that may cause, or be capable of causing, offence to you or someone else who is aware of it.

I've seen many of the later WA death records without parent names - it may relate to when the indexes were created. I've not seen a birth index without parent names but given this one is 1918, it could be done in more recent times. Perhaps they are following the England/Wales index ideas!

The birth certificate would have whatever parent names were provided (presumably at least a mother) - but death certificates would/would not depending on the knowledge of the informant.

WA certificates contain much the same information as those from the eastern mainland states.

Parents have never been detailed on the Birth Indexes in WA post 1905.  I haven't had to search recently so don't know if that has been updated.

JM that has to do with the removal of words from original entries, not names.  Some idiot thought it was a good idea.

 :)

And if WA BDM's index was prepared with similar pattern re names as NSW was, then Aboriginal can be found under headings including   Name as recently as 1918, so not just in Early Church Records.   I agree, re the person who thought it a good idea.

Very recently here in WA, one document (Birth Certificate?) caused offence to an Aboriginal gent with the word "Aboriginal" redacted.

Edit: Just now noted Dundee's entry above. The link tells the story!

Thanks, everyone, for all the feedback. The birth certificate sounds like the one I need.

This is not my direct family but one a relative had a long association with. I am curious about the parentage of Frank. However, I just checked and there's a 100 year rule for birth certificates being available to non-family members, so I'll have to wait until next year to satisfy my curiosity.
