Sidney Tomkins/WW1
« on: Thursday 12 July 18 15:08 BST (UK) »
Hi All
I would like to find out what regiment my grandfather was in during WW1.
He was born in Elton Herefordshire Dec 1899, His Birth registered at Ludlow Shropshire.
I have a photo but can not upload as its too big and I don't know how to get it altered to fit.

Hi Jim
Yes Photo is in uniform no cap or badge.
But I don't think he was called up until some time in 1918 so don't think he would of seen much if any fighting.

Depends on whether he lied about his age.
There are 6 4 Sidney Tomkins medal cards (no middle name).
1 missing presumed dead so not him that leaves 5 3.
With regards to his uniform does he have a medal ribbon above his left breast pocket?
Does he have any stripes?
Is he wearing normal infantry trousers or riding breeches?

Hi Jim
Photos only show top half no ribbons and no stripes. The second pic the uniform looks slightly better less worn (not sure what they are called ) but there is a cord /band from the left lapel going down to under the armpit.

It's called a lanyard.
Unfortunately it doesn't rule out our 3 contenders who are:
522801 Sapper Royal Engineers.
635720 Private Labour Corps previously 40274 S. Wales Borderers.
20695 Private  1st. Royal Dragoons.
Any of them could have worn a lanyard.

Hi Jim
Thanks for looking.
He had a older brother Leonard that was in the Monmouths then in south wales borderers he was killed in action so was easier to find.
Is there no way to locate where he would of been is the word attested.
I do know his parents where living in south shropshire when he would of been called up.But don't know where he was working Farm work proberly a Waggoner

And when he got married to my gran 1926 he was working on a farm near Knighton Montgomeryshire

Do you know if he served after the war as the Dragoon re-enlisted in 1919?
Unfortunately around 60% of WW1 records were destroyed in the Blitz.
Sidney's was one of them.
