Canterbury Probate Records (1396-1858) Database
« on: Thursday 12 July 18 20:07 BST (UK) »
Hiya

I've been trying to access the Canterbury Probate Database [http:/wills.canterbury-cathedral.org]  online for the last two days with no success. Each time I try to reach the website I get a message saying that the page "cannot be reached". I've tried on different web browsers [Internet Explorer and Google Chrome] but nothing seems to work. I've run diagnostics on the browsers which show no problems there. I have also tried to access the database through Google and directly from the Canterbury Cathedral Archives website but this hasn't worked either.

Does anyone know if there is a problem with this website? Is it still active or has it been removed or the address changed?

If anyone has any ideas or can help me work out where to find these Wills online it would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Matt

Canterbury archives at the cathedral are still there. Dover archives closed and moved to Maidstone. Maidstone hold west Kent records and Canterbury east Kent records for parishes etc. General records are held at Maidstone.

Hi all

Just to clarify things it is not the Canterbury Cathedral Archives website I am trying to access but the online database of Kent Wills. The web address is below:

https://wills.canterbury-cathedral.org/

The website has worked for ages and I have not seen any sign on it that it was closing down or changing - it just appears to have stopped.

The website lists all probate records [Wills and Inventories etc] proved in the Archdeaconry of ourt of Canterbury and the Consistitory Court of Canterbury.

The Canterbury Cathedral Archives website is still working but even if you try to get to the Wills website through that there is no indication that the website has changed. If it has moved to a different website address then why does this not show online?

I might call the Archives tomorrow to see if they can help too.

Matt

Same as me. I visited the site several times last month and also visited it in the first week of July. I also had no problems then.

What's the "wayback machine"? It's as if the website has just been taken offline with no explanation.

It's all very puzzling.
