Evan Davies of St. Martins, Shropshire.
« on: Saturday 14 July 18 14:50 BST (UK) »
My g.g.grandfather Evan Davies was born about 1815, and according to the census he was born in St. Martins, Shropshire. He married Mary Woolam in Ellesmere, in 1837. He had 6 children, the eldest of whom was William born 1838, in St. Martins. In 1861 he was a lay preacher and coal mine owner. I would like to find his ancestors, but no Evan is in the St. Martins's PR of a suitable date. As he was a lay preacher he was probably baptised in a non-conformist church. The only baptism of an Evan of a suitable date I have been able to find is non-conformist  in Holywell, the son of William, a miner of Moel y Crea, Halkin, on the. 25 February, 1815
Evan named his eldest son William, suggesting this was his father's name. There was a William Davies in the 1841 and 1851 censuses, married to Ann, born in Whittington, who would fit, but he was a carpenter. Could a miner become a carpenter?
I'd appreciate suggestions for Evan's parents.

Hi

I've searched all the surrounding parishes in Shropshire and Denbighshire but, so far, I don't see a baptism either in the C of E records or the available non-c records.

I'm not sure if the St Martins n-c  records survived  :-\

The online searches throw up a lot of Johns but I don't think these are really relevant in this case. Most of my Evan ancestors from that area (I have a long line of them!) were never names/known as John.

(re your last thread - pity it wasn't the Evan and Jane, as the Jane was my relative and I could have helped with info!)

Had to do a bit of googling;

The border village and civil parish of St Martin's is in Shropshire, England, just north of Oswestry and east of Chirk.

Have you ruled out the on christened 2 May 1813   Oswestry,  to JOHN/JANE?
(Familysearch.Org)

FreeREG also has 2 Evan DAVIS Baptisms in Chirk;
16 Jan 1814 to JOHN/MARGARET, Father a Collier
30 Jan 1814 to EDWARD/SARAH, Father a Collier

Not sure now - all the children on the 1841 were b. in the Pentre/Penyclawdd area of Chirk Parish which is to the opposite end of the parish to Pontfaen/St Martins;  on the boundary of the Ruabon/Llangollen and Chirk parish. This is the same area as their address on the 1841.

They could have moved between Evan and Elizabeth's births but not sure  :-\

Added -  further checking
