Robert Mackenzie Of Caldarvan estate

Hey guys! Need help for a friend who is intrigued with the work I have done on my tree, a lot of thanks to the help of you guys !!!!

She is looking to find out if anyone can tell us where the Mackenzie family came from?

Robert bought Caldarvan estate near Gartocharn I’m 1802 the family then went in to own many estates we know about all of these.

What we need is who was Robert Mackenzie? where did he come from ? Who is his family? What age was he? We are also interested in finding out if the house was built by the Mackenzie family or if it was already there if so who previously owned the estate?

My friend (Echo) Mary.E.C.C.Mackenzie has requested this information any help would be great

Their burial place was in Dumbarton which might take you back.

Ahh thank you! We have trolled through so much trying to trace them they just seemed to appear from knowwhere by the time I had got to my friends grandad her relatives had bought or married into lots of estates including edenbarnet law Cochno achinacraig barnmill she has roots that span over all the old estates from Dumbarton to baljafery right across the Kilpatrick Hills !

A James Mackenzie of Craigpark, Dennistoun, merchant (textiles?) & provost of Glasgow was a party to the Merchants House buying & laying out the Necropolis as their own kirkyard at the Ramshorn was full.  The Merchant's House will be the place for info', wouldn't think there were that many MacKenzie merchants & must be Heilan originally.

Aww superb mate thank you !! Yea she remembers an uncle from her child hood from Applecross but there is so many Mackenzie from there it’s going to be days of trapping through when we find a link!

I would think off MacKenzie lairds from the Applecross area so, Seaforth, Torridon & Gairloch.

And to add, McKenzie purchased the farm from the Earl of Dundonald (Cochrane) who held most of the land in this area.  So it would have been a farm house which I gather it isn't, so one must assume it was built by the McKenzie's.
