Where do I find an inquest?
« on: Sunday 15 July 18 15:17 BST (UK) »
I have a copy of the death certificate for my grandfather.
He died 24 Aug 1938
The death was registered by W H Whitehouse, Coroner for County of London S.E. District.
It states an inquest was held on 29 Aug 1938

The death certificate states the death was accidental.

Is there anywhere I can find a full copy/transcript of the inquest?

Few reports survive but you could email the London Metropolitan Archives to ask if they hold they file;  you could also try searching local newspapers.

I found a coroner's file from 1902 at the LMA;  fascinating to read it.

Good Luck!

Thanks nanny jan

I've spent most of this afternoon looking through newspaper archives, but so far nothing.

I was hoping there might be somewhere I hadn't heard of.

London Metropolitan Archives have a guide to coroners' records at
https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/things-to-do/london-metropolitan-archives/visitor-information/Documents/41-coroners-records-for-london-and-middlesex.pdf

I think the relevant bit is on pages 9-10, but note that only a 10% sample has been kept.

In very many cases, the best source of information on inquests is newspaper reports.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Not all newspapers are online yet, it might mean a search at the relevant county archives scrolling through micro-films.

Many thanks Arthurk

I will have a good look through the LMA guide tomorrow, when I can give it my full attention.

I suppose, because it was recorded as an accidental death, the newspapers were not that interested. I can't find a thing.

Thanks for looking
