Bookbox.  many thanks for that. I am assuming Adolf's wife died and he remarried. Not long afterwards! Both marriages in St Pancras. I will check the other children's mothers.

I don't think so. The JOLLES/HICKS marriage you first enquired about was June Quarter 1907. The son Josef, mmn Sexton, was registered in December Quarter 1907. More likely that all children had the same mother, Annie, whose surname was variable. Which of the children is your direct line?

I think you need to order the 1907 marriage certificate to get Annie's father's name, as there is clearly some difficulty about her surname. The marriage isn't online and may have been in a register office, especially if Adolph was Jewish.

Adolph claimed to be Austrian, rather than Polish, by birth (though, as we have seen, the census may not be reliable on birthplaces).

avm228.  Many thanks.  The 1911 Census says Austria, I know, but a mention in The London Gazette for 1947 says Poland. He was probably from Galicia, where Sigmund Freud's ancestors came from. In 1911 Austria meant the whole of the Austro-Hungarian empire, but, with border changes his birthplace is in post-1945 Poland. Thank you for Miriam's marriage of 1942.

Have you thought of applying for his British Naturalisation papers? Currently closed to access, but you can submit an FOI request from this page ...
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C11122907

Access may be granted with the sensitive parts redacted. You could then go and look at them in person at Kew.

BookBox    That is an excellent idea. I have been going there for years, but only recently got a Readers' Card. btw my own ancestors come from Lincs, Notts and Norfolk, and, on my mother's side, entirely from Scotland. I am trying to help Emily Tyler's grand-daughter!! If I can ever help with East Midlands or Norfolk ancestors, please let me know.

Have you found Annie (Hicks) on previous census ?

This might have been a child whose father  died young and she took on perhaps a step father's surname, Sexton/Saxton a possibility as I found out recently for another RC

THIS IS SUPPOSITION ON MY PART AT THE MOMENT

The only Annie A Hicks I can see is

Annie Ada Hicks born to George William and Rebecca (nee Scott)
Baptised 30/09/1888 (registered birth 1885 St Saviour)
occ Wood Turner
8 Angel Place

George William Hicks aged 20 father William Dec
married 22/05/1882
Rebecca Scott aged 20 father James Dec

There is a family 1891 all born Walworth to these parents
Florence Margaret 1882
Annie Ada 1885
1887 Charlotte Eliza Julia

I then found a death 1897 George William Hicks St Saviour aged 34 about the right age for the above G W Hicks

I cannot find any of them on 1901 so far

This is at the moment supposition on my part but if only we could find a Rebecca Saxton/Sexton on 1901 we might have cracked it
