FindMyPast has the baptisms (transcriptions) of -

John Kirkby, bap 7 Aug 1799, Ormskirk, mother Margaret Kirkby, no father named
William Kirkby, bap 20 Mar 1796, Cockerham, mother Peggy Kirkby, no father named

These places are a long way apart, Cockerham towards the north of Lancashire and Ormskirk to the south.

No problem recognising how far apart - had checked the parishes before posting. Simply presenting possibilities within the timeframe.

there is also a James Kirby mother Ellen Kirby who  was born in Halsall baptised 16 Nov 1794

I noticed that too. Do you suppose they were a family of ladies who were free with their affections or  girls who were unlucky. Kirkby is a fairly common name so there might be no connection between them. The town of Kirkby is not far away. When I was researching my Winstanley ancestors in the Billinge area around 1800 I turned up a lot of "base" Winstanleys. I concluded it was down to it being such a locally common surname.

Thank you everyone, sorry for the late reply, I live in Australia.
Think we have now cleared up regarding the names of Henry Ambrose's spurious children.

Have been to Ormskirk, a few years, but wasn't sure where Cockerham was.   I think we have the two children as now Thomas Banks, and John Kirkby.

Cheers

Somewhere in all my Ambrose family files I'm sure I have copies of both bastardy orders for Henry Ambrose. When I find them I can photograph them and send them you. I descend from Henry's brother Thomas and I think it's possible we were in correspondence some years ago.

Gibel,
Trying to recollect our connection, have been searching Ambrose family for years, and yes went to Bickerstaff and Kirkby where we found an Ambrose grave.

Would love to see this information.   Will message you.

just for interest. This is on the graveyard site for St Chad's Kirkby

Hilary Ambrose 18.2.06: Many thanks for your help. I shall definitely be able to find the grave again. I've been researching the Ambroses for 6 years and have amassed a large amount of information on them back to the 1680's. All the Ambroses in S W Lancashire in the 1881 census (unless they say born in Ireland or elsewhere) are related to each other. They moved into Kirkby from Bickerstaffe in the 1750's and appear to have then gone to Halsall, Thomas AMBROSE being the last to be buried there and his wife Cicily.

Ambrose Family Ormskirk and wider Lancashire
« Reply #16 on: Thursday 22 August 19 02:55 BST (UK) »
I live in New Zealand and  am currently researching this family. Jane Ambrose 1761 is my 4th great grandmother.  I have gone back to Richard 1553-1612 and possibly his father William.  There are so many children with the same names that I am getting very confused and would appreciate any help in sorting them out.  I do not believe that Richard, the Vicar of Ormskirk is a direct ancestor, but your belief that the Ambrose Family here is mostly related suggests to me that he could be a close connection.

All assistance greatly appreciated.

Nanatrish,
I will look into my records again, wondering have you had your DNA test done, to see if we match up.
Quite a number of Ambrose descendants here in Australia.
