WORLDWIDE, how many people have taken an autosomal DNA test?
« on: Monday 16 July 18 12:07 BST (UK) »
Does anybody have a vague idea? I'm sure the different testing companies keep their database size to themselves, but I was just interested in knowing what percentage of the 8 billion people on the planet are likely to have been tested.  Please give your source.

What about just in the UK?

Martin

No idea but I can safely say that the majority are Americans.  ;D

Here are at least two companies that haven't kept their database size to themselves.

Ancestry from August 2017 - https://www.ancestry.com/corporate/newsroom/press-releases/ancestry-surpasses-5-million-people-dna-database-giving-customers-even-more

MyHeritage from from January 2018 - https://blog.myheritage.com/2018/01/major-updates-and-improvements-to-myheritage-dna-matching/

I liked Ancestry's quote: "The AncestryDNA database grew from 4 to 5 million in the last three months. That’s about as fast as babies are born in the United States.  If everyone in the database stood arm to arm, the length of the line would be long enough to span the distance between San Francisco and Tokyo."  That's very American - don't they know we measure things in 'double-decker-bus lengths'?

Thank you, Martin

American-based companies typically describe things in American terms.  I don't know why anyone would expect them to do otherwise.

James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

David, thank you 15 or 16 million out of the whole planet isn't a lot, but I suppose of each of those has a few hundred names in an associated tree it's starting to spread.

The trouble is, Martin, not many of them even have a few names in their tree, let alone a few hundred. :)

But my dna is on 3 sites
Ancestry
FTDA
My Heritage
So the totals will be less - unless they are counting the the number of purchased tests, even then three family members have paid for ancestry and ftda
