Freig as a surname
« on: Tuesday 17 July 18 18:27 BST (UK) »
My GGGrandmother was called Elizabeth Freig. She married John Livingstone in Kildalton, Islay in the 1800's and had a number of children. I had reason to believe she emigrated after her husband died. However ! another member of my family produced documents showing her to be living in Salford with her daughter Annie who had the married name of Goldie.
I will contine this line - however I am curious about the name 'Freig' ( spelling has variations)
My late Mother alwas told us that Elizabeth was of Danish descent. Has anyone ever come across this surname.

My GGGmother name was Elizabeth Freig (Not sure exact spelling)
She married John Livingstone on the Isle of Islay.
Estimated birth is 1834 in Arbroath. My Mother always told us she was off Danish descent. Is there any records that could provide me with information on Parents etc.

In 1861 John and Elizabeth were living at Craignagorhar, Kidalton, Argyllshire. She is age 48, born Arbroath (1851 she is listed as born in Forfarshire, Angus).
On a couple of her childrens’ births listed on Scotlandspeople (Donald b Kidalton 1837 and David b Kidalton 1838) she appears as Eliza Friock/Freock. There is a place near Arbroath called Friockheim. You may find something of interest here regarding the origins of this place.

The surname Friock goes back quite a long way in Angus. Earliest mention on Scotlandspeople is a birth in Brechin in 1654.
