1939 Register - mysterious lady born 1911
« on: Wednesday 18 July 18 00:45 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I have found the 1939 Register for my grandparents Charles & Sarah Belcher, 193 Beech Lane, Earley, Berks and amongst them is a Annie Lister (withthe names  Beatrice Mary added) born 3-7-1911 and Married.

If I'm reading it correctly Annie is listed as #4 with # 3 & 5 blanked out.

I was born just before the WW2 and lived with my g/parents, mother and aunt at this address for the duration until my father came back in 1944/5 and have never heard of this person.

Can anyone let me know if they have any knowledge of Annie Lister, please?

I'm not sure when the 1939 Register was taken but my parents and myself (Blanked out) are listed
in their home and we (mother & self) moved into Beech Lane in 1940 after war had broken out with my dad joining the RAF.

Any help will be appreciated

Alan

Not sure if this helps or not but the 1939 register was taken on the 29th September 1939.

Do you know who the two redacted people are? Or could they be related to Annie?

I would suspect either a lodger or a possible evacuee family.

The first thing to do would be to trace her back to a marriage and then her birth to see if there is a family link.

But if not then evacuees would seem to fit the circumstances. Looking on some maps around the time Earley looks quite rural. As Annie is shown as married I'd try to find her husband and if he is living somewhere like London then it would be a good bet that she and the children moved to a place of relative safety.

Presumably she later moved out. Either to make way for you and your mum, or perhaps was one of the evacuee families who decided their home wasn't so unsafe after all.

Hi,

Thanks for your help.

tellx - I have have no idea who the redacted people were, other than they could be my two uncles who
both joined the army (1939/40 ish). I have never been able locate them in the 1939 Registers (both deceased now)

Nick_Ips - You may have the answererd the query. My mum did say, many years ago,  that our house in Mill Lane, Earley,  was given over to evacuees from London during the war, and the two of us moved into my g/parents house.
So its just possible they are the people listed with my g/parents.

Earley, better known as Lower Earley was very rural and I enjoyed my time there, young as I was, because I had the freedom to roam the the countryside and made many friends from the few houses that existed.

Ribbo

The war had started 3 September then came the 1939 Register. In theory anyone being very patriotic could be  enlisted and be in the Services by Register Day and not on the Register.

Hi

1935 Electoral shows Charles, Sarah and NORAH Belcher in Hawthorns, 193 Beech Lane Wokingham.

By 1950 & 1955 just Charles & Sarah

I think that Libby9 has cracked it ( the original question ), not that you need my vote.

There is a William G Lister b.1914 living in West Ham but I can't see the details (as a non-subscriber). West Ham would certainly fit as an area being evacuated around that time.

In my experiece multiple family households are usually recorded in the order Husband1, Wife1, ChildrenOf1, Husband2, Wife2, ChildrenOf2 (delete as appropriate).

Therefore if Annie is number 4 in the household then it is a reasonable assumption her child is number 5, but who is number 3?

Possibly another evacuee? Possibly William (incorrectly) redacted?

Hi all,

I think between all your comments that you may well have cracked it (as Ray says). It will always remain a mystery.

Nick_Ips; You ask who is at #3; My only guess is that it could be Annie Lister's husband as she is listed as "unpaid domestic duties" and #5; could be their baby Margaret as found by Libby9.

Just to confirm Rays comment;

1935 Electoral  Role lists my g/parents and my mother. After the war we moved back to Mill Lane, Earley,  leaving my g/parents alone.

Thank you all for your help.
