Dove Street, Pallion
« on: Wednesday 18 July 18 15:10 BST (UK) »
Hi

Could anyone tell me where Dove Street in Pallion was.  I have looked on the 1939 and 1888 map of Pallion, but they don't mention it.  The 1888 map seems clearer and I believe it was somewhere near Woodbine Terrace (which is mentioned on the map), and somewhere in the group of streets you see on the map, but I really don't know.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mofamily
If you go to the website www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/439503/557500/12/101064 it gives you a map of Sunderland,if you curser along to Pallion you will see that Dove Street is just behind Woodbine Terrace as you thought and it is clearly shown. The whole area was re-developed in the 1950's.

This mark shows Dove Street, you may have to change the zoom level with the - in the top left, if you keep zooming out you get the modern map. https://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html#/Map/437560/557833/12/101200

This is a good site for a Sunderland Ordnance Survey maps http://www.durham-images.org/public/cemeteries/maps.html
There are street indexes  but the "Index is of a later date that 1956, so it is possible that a street may not appear in the 1956 Block or Sheet Maps. It may have been demolished earlier, and this could be verified by searching earlier editions of the Block Map."
Dove Street is shown at http://www.durham-images.org/public/oldos/b3757/files/assets/basic-html/index.html#3 then you can use the > at the top to see later maps of the area.

Thanks Stan.

Brilliant as usual.  The map is so clear I can identify the actual house (within 3 anyway) opposite the Methodist Chapel, and all the other streets various members of the family lived.  Gives a real sense of history.

Thanks again.
