Michael Thomas Green burial 1951
« on: Thursday 19 July 18 10:07 BST (UK) »
Hi can some kind person help me in solving another one of my Green family questions? I have a death for Michael on GRO for m quarter 1950 age 71 Manchester. The age and place fits. He was born Aug 1878 Burnley and was at Salvation Army Hostel, Frances St in 1939. His actual birth date is recorded, 25 Aug 1878. There is a burial for Michael Thomas Green on 11/5/1951 at Phillips park cemetery. I can find no other deaths for around this date. I have been reliably told that he died at the Hostel. I have yet to receive his death cert. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Many thanks.

Thanks Blackburn Fossil. Would this have been the Hostel address?

Hi mimcholm

A search of the Manchester Images website will bring up loads of photos of Francis Street and the Salvation army hostel.

Here is one of them

Francis Street is still there but has been redeveloped, it can be found using google earth two streets from Strangeways Prison.

Thanks again Blackburn Fossil. Why do you think there's a discrepancy with the death and burial?

Thanks Blackburn Fossil. I have received Michael's death cert today. It is the same Michael as the burial record, as his address is Francis St. Do you know if the homeless had their bodies donated to medical science I the 1950's? That would explain the delay with the burial. Also, no suspicious cause of death listed. Many thanks again.

Hi mimcholm

Sure is a strange one for which I have no answer, but at least you know he died in Crumpsall Hospital, they may have held onto the body until someone claimed it? I don't think it was ever a medical school  as I have never heard of it being one.
If it had still been a Workhouse he would have been buried asap after death.
