Identifying a uniform
« on: Thursday 19 July 18 10:34 BST (UK) »
This is a photo of my great grandfather Cyril Powell, but I have been unable to find a record of his service and he survived the war. He was born 1890 and lived in Clydach, Llanelly Parish, Breconshire and was a grocer. The back of the postcard says it was made in Lewisham. Can anyone identify the buttons or shoulder badge, does the braiding on the right mean anything? Any help much appreciated.

There's nothing to identify his Regt. The only info I can glean from this is that he's wearing the earlier tunic which was replaced in 1916. His shoulder title is short so probably not the Notts & Derby Cyril,  the W. Indies Cyril, the London Regt. Cyril or the SLI/RAMC chap as there's a record for him. So that leaves SLI or RGA .
The RGA Cyril appears on the T.F. roll with the number 371234. This is his post 1917 number given when the T.F. were re-numbered & we can tell from this which part of the RGA he was in. In this case the numbers 371001-374000 went to the Pembroke Garrison manned by 44 Coy. R.G.A.
As he's on the Roll means he went overseas at some point.
On saying this RGA TF had the letter "T" above & I can't see that in this.

I have studied with a magnifying glass without success. What is the black mark on his uniform below his chin?

I think it may be a reflection of another photograph.  There seems to be a few more to the left of that but they are more faint.  Also notice reflection of a lightshade with 3 light bulbs above his head.

There are reflections of windows in the house across the street. The black mark is between the curtains in one of the windows.

The RGA man 371234 identified above by Jim can be discounted. He was from Milford Haven and died in 1918

I can't readily identify anything about your Cyril in the Welsh online papers Here's the webpage if you want to have a playaround

The photo is an enlarged copy that my grandparents have framed in their hall, I've dug out the original postcard, (the black mark is my mum's graduation photo).

There are what appear to be five names on the back, Gilligan, Duckworth, Mann, Cox, Root. Whether they have anything to do with the photo is unclear but they could be people he served with.

I'd say that's a good shout, and it might fit with the photo in Lewisham as there was an ASC base there at Grove Park?
