Pest House Oakridge Bisley
« on: Thursday 19 July 18 15:03 BST (UK) »
Hi All

Does anyone have information regarding a Pest House 1850 - 1860+ in Oakridge Lynch Bisley.  Whilst researching the line of Philip Gardiner b. 1824 Bisley I came across him in the 1871 census living with a number of children (no female adult) with the surname Phelps.   Further checks identified some of the children's baptisms giving the Mother as Hannah Phelps and no father named.  Her address was given as Pest House.  Philip is however named as father on some of the children's marriage certs.  My assumption is he is the father of the children and for some reason didn't or couldn't marry the mother but why is she residing in a Pest House.  At a guess could this be a workhouse might she be ill but still able to give birth to several children or could there be another reason  ???
Any help would be appreciated.   :)

Last question first.

Hi
Yes, there was a big riot in 1896 reported in the papers of the time, " arrangements were made  for patient to be removed to Oakridge where two cottages known as the Pest House had been converted into a hospital"
The rioters were not happy with this and tried to burn the house down.
So I guess they could have been ordinary cottages earlier.
There was a George and Ernest Phelps amongst the rioters.

Hi cath151

Yes I had read about the riot previously but hadn't made any link via Phelps/Gardiner's at the time with relatives.  Interesting to know there were two involved and I look forward to rummaging around for more information.

Many thanks  :)
