Wife of Dougall McFadyen
« on: Thursday 19 July 18 20:05 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for my great-great-grandmother but am finding no records for either her marriage to my great-great-grandfather Dougall McFadyen, or any reference to her on the birth records I have for the birth of my great-grandfather Colin McFadyen. I know that Colin was born in Glasgow in about 1886, and Dougall was born in about 1864, so she would have been born around the same time I assume. My mum seems to think that Colin had siblings, at least a sister named Clara. Can anyone help please?

Thanks,
Amelia

Scotlandspeople has a birth in Govan in 1885 of a Colin McFadyen. That certificate will specify his parent's names including mother's maiden name, and date of marriage.

If you spend seven quid you can get the birth certificate, the marriage certificate (which will give names of both parties' parents) and a couple of census entries for Govan

There's a marriage in Old Monkland in 1884 of a Dougald McFadyen and an Agnes Wilson. It's the only male McFadyen marriage in the Scottish records between 1870 and 1886

Experiment with spellings - mac as well as mc, swop the d and the y, dd instead of dy, mcfadzean, mcfadgen.  If you find a John born 1760s I'm searching for him!

Thank you both! I did find the marriage between Dougald McFadyen and Agnes Wilson, but there was also one between a Dougald McFadyen and a Sarah Hart which would also work with my dates. It's so confusing because there are McFadyens all over the place! When I can afford it I'll look on Scotlandspeople, thanks :)

There's another Colin McFadyen born in 1890. A search on SP for first name beginning with "C", surname beginning "McFad" or "MacFad" 1880-90 doesn't throw up too many possibles.

The Colin born in 1886 in Govan looks to be living with his grandmother Barbra McFadyen in Kilchoman Argyll in 1891. Also in that household is Barbra’s unmarried son Dugald, age 23.
In 1901 he is back in Govan but still living with his grandmother. The household now includes a daughter Annie age 39 and son Dugald age 31. I think you really need to view the 1886 birth certificate. Is it possible that he was actually illegitimate - maybe the son of Annie?

Amelia, have you looked at censuses for Colin?

There is this possible entry for Colin from what you mention:

Barbra McFadyen 64 Bailer (as transcribed, boiler?) Maker's Wife b. Easdale Argyll
Dugald McFadyen 23 son  Grocer & Provision Merchant b. Govan
Colin McFadyen 5 grandson b. Govan

Address: Main St Clark's Land, Kilchoman, Argyll

Monica

ADDED: Sorry Isobel. Posts crossed over.
