This couple where in Cheltenham in 1829 as Mary FIELD was christened 29 November

Gloucestershirebmd

Burial: 1847, Cheltenham, Arthur FIELD aged 49

Assume he was Roman Catholic - (born Ireland 1841 census).

Quickly looking at Jeremiah's description on goal records, - he appears to have light or brown hair + grey/hazel eyes and each time oval fresh complexion.  Lots of tattoos on the 1870 one - sailor and flag and anchors...

But this is interesting, say he is Roman Catholic and known to the P.C Day for 13 years - and his mother is Ellen FIELD of 23 Barton Street Cheltenham

----

1861 Census, Cheltenham 23 Barton Street

FIELD

Ellen - Widow - 43, born Ireland
Mary - dau - 20 - born Cheltenham
Catharine - 8
Margaret - 14

(there on the 1851 census Cheltenham : Ancestry transcribed as Jounnah FIELD aged 7 - living with his mother Ellen (says unmarried and aged 31....  and siblings)

Good Morning Everyone,

Thank you for your inputs.....I am extremely grateful and will now try to rationalise them.

However, for the sake of doubt I must stress that I am only interested in Jeremiah FIELD who states in his convict documentation that his father is dead and his mother is Ellen FIELD, Charwoman, resident at 23 Burton Street, Cheltenham, where she remained for quite a long period of her life.

For the moment,

Ancestry -  Ellen FIELD is aged 6 on the 1881 census with parents: Jeremiah Jaz and also James & Sarah

Channel Islands Baptism

St Pierre Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands

11 July 1874

Child: Ellen Sarah FIELD

and

a son

James Francis FIELD - 31 July 1875, St Pierre Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands

-----

With Jeremiah's tattoos - he seems to have 'gone to sea'

parents: Jeremiah Jas. FIELD -  Spouse: Sarah Elizabeth Ann ELLIOT BENHAM

So far...  found on the 1901 census Jersey

Sarah E.A.E. FIELD - married aged 48 - Dressmaker own account, born St Helier
Sarah is on the 1911 census in Jersey, had 9 children in total, 5 living 4 dead)
Henry J FIELD - son - 23 Printer, Compositor, born St Peter  (he's on the 1911 census)

-----

--

1861 Census, Jersey, St Helier

48 Hill Street

BENHAM

Francis - 30 - Taboconist & Town Crier - born Jersey St Helier
Sarah - 30 born England
Sarah E.A.E. BENHAM - 8 - born Jersey St Helier

---

Had a quick look on Ancestry - there is a family tree on Francis BENHAM born 1831 St Helier, Jersey

---

Looking at the 1881 census - I think - this is Sarah - on this census called Elizabeth - as she is running a Grocer's shop (as her father did) and is a Widow - the children i.e. Harry 13 and Willie 11 tie up with the 1891 census

St James Street

Elizabeth FIELD - aged 38 Wid, Grocer & Plain work - born St Helier
Harry - 13
Willie - 11
John - 8
Roland - 5  ***

There is a Roland FIELD's Navy records are on Ancestry - born  5 April 1885 - and joined up in 1903

Hello Capetown,

Thank you for all your efforts ....much appreciated.

Your comments about Jeremiah's tattoos and his "gone to sea" have an interesting resonance and may scupper our thoughts.   The 1861 England Census at RG9/4493/170, p.48 shows a Jeremiah FIELD from Cheltenham in the forces, possibly Navy, but unfortunately "MY" Jeremiah FIELD at this stage was in prison and not released until January 1864!!

Why should the "Guernsey FIELD" name his first child Ellen, maybe after his mother??

A problem??

For the moment,

Capetown,

15/10/1860 Worcester Michaelmas Sessions Larceny plus previous convictions (3)......4 years Penal Servitude.....Worcester Gaol to Millbank Prison 29/11/1860 to Parkhurst Prison 28/12/1860 then released on licence 16/01/1864: Destination Cheltenham.   The Parkhurst Prison record quotes his mother as Ellen FIELD at 23 Burton Street, Cheltenham on FindMyPast at

https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=tna%2fccc%2fpcom3%2f134%2f00298&parentid=tna%2fccc%2f2b%2fpcom3%2f01462378

The Guernsey profile still looks odds on favourite ::) ::)

On the 1870 Prison Record for Jeremiah FIELD show he was aged 24 and a Shoemaker (obviously as we know from Cheltenham).

When children are christened at St Peter's Port - he gives his names as Jeremiah Jas. FIELD and on the 1881 census he is a Boot maker

This could be him on the 1871 census

Oxfordshire
Neithrop
District 11

New Land Road

James FIELD  unmarried, aged 25, Shoemaker, born Cheltenham, Glos.  (lodger)

(as my g grandfather changed his surname on some census returns  - being called by a second name is very plausible)

Capetown,

Thank you so much for all your help and interest.

I have collated the items collected and, unless someone can prove absolutely he is not the right person, Jeremiah FIELD has a full profile, except his death.

For the moment,
