Early Wills (17th century and before) (COMPLETE)
« on: Friday 20 July 18 15:09 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to find a will for my 13x great grandfather George GAUNT (died 1606) of Pudsey, West Yorkshire. I know the will exists as it is mentioned in 'Encyclopedia of American Biography. New Series. Vol. 16'. It states:

(XIII) George Gaunt, son of John Gaunt II. Held land in the manor of Calverley, at court 7 November 1600. He was buried February 22, 1606-07; his will proved March following. Children: 1. Robert, of whom further. 2. Beatrice, baptized at Calverley, August 17, 1576, married April 14, 1607, William Coutts.

(Records supplied by A. T. Butler, Esquire, College of Arms, London, England)

Slightly earlier in the book it also mentions he had a sister Agnes, who is mentioned in his will.

I have always struggled with locating probate records and this is still true today. I have looked in many indexes and books I thought might have it listed, but no luck. Would anyone know where to look to locate this?

Thank you.

Jack

Most likely to be found in the Prerogative Court of York?
Records will be at the Borthwick Insitute for Archives.

Ah yes.

Thank you both ever so much! Easy to find once pointed in the right direction. I have now located the will and ordered a copy from the Borthwick Institute.

Thanks so much!
