101st Regiment, 1872
« on: Friday 20 July 18 16:59 BST (UK) »
I have a marriage in Castletown, Isle of Man in 1872 where the groom's occupation is described as "Private Soldier, 101st Regiment".

However, googling 101st Regiment shows the last incarnation of this name disbanded in 1817?

Can anyone suggest what the Regiment might be?

Various Regiments were stationed at the Barracks in Castletown; as in those days it was the main town of the Isle of Man.

The 101st amalgamated with the 104th after the Cardwell reforms in 1881 so still under that name in 1872.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Haven't had a look yet however Regiments were often described by their number rather than their name. You need to see what the 101st. Regt. of Foot morphed into & that will be his Regt.
I see MaxD has beat me too it.

Stationed in Bury and Manchester in 1872 - doesn't preclude a detachment on the IoM.

Good afternoon,

Two different regts have had that no.

One as you say was disbanded in 1817.

The other was from 1759 to 1861an East India company regt under various titles. In 1861 it became the 101st Royal Bengal Fusiliers. In 1881 it became the 1st batt Royal Munster Fusiliers with the 104th Bengal Fusiliers becoming the 2nd batt. Disbanded in 1922 after partition of Ireland.

12 October 1872 IoM Times - ….detachment of 101st Royal Bengal Fusiliers ...stationed here (Castletown) upwards of  12 months ...left here Friday... men behaved themselves well bar one perhaps*...much respected by the inhabitants .  Another detachment had replaced them on Thursday.

Thanks all ;D

I am normally pretty good at following the various regiments and their titles ::)
Just this one beat me - and the pub was calling ;D ;D

MaxD - the lady who married the soldier had an illegitimate child in 1871! So you may well be right ;D ;D
