UK Indexers
« on: Saturday 21 July 18 14:12 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I received an email from The Genealogist yesterday asking for people to transcribe documents and/or photograph gravestones for UK Indexers.  Any work done was to be paid in vouchers spendable with them or their associated products.

I was wondering if anyone had ever done this work.  It wasn't clear how much work needed to be done or what vouchers would be forthcoming.

Cheers,

Ginger

Those rates of pay in the link are for professional indexers, ie.people who are setting up an index for various types of books.

The Genealogist is offering vouchers for transcribing records they have. It is not for indexing.

I did a census piece for them tonks ago. At the time I got a £10 voucher for a whole census piece of about 5000 people.
No idea what the current incentive is.
All census look up transcriptions are Crown Copyright http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

After a lot of searching I have discovered that one line of census gives you one credit.  3500 credits pays you £5.00.  7000 credits pays you £10.00 and 14,000 credits pays you £10.00.  These 'payments' are in the form of gift vouchers which can be used for subscription to The Geneologist.

There is no limit to how much or little you do or any timescale.  Considering most transcribing is voluntary and unpaid this isn't too bad a deal if you have some time on your hands and want to help fellow-geneologists.

Thank you everyone, that's very interesting.    I think most of us with the common interest would do this work on a voluntary basis, particularly if others were not charged to access it and while one would never expect to retire on the proceeds it is nice to get a little something from a commercial site for our efforts.   I think I'll give it a whirl.
