Looking for JACK CHEESEMAN born sometime between 1888-1891
« on: Saturday 21 July 18 22:18 BST (UK) »
Hi. I am trying to trace my great-grandfather on my mother's side. His name was Jack Cheeseman. However we are not convinced he was born as Jack.

From his marriage certificate to my great-grandmother he is Jack Henry Cheeseman, aged 35, living at 4 Church Terrace, Leamington Spa, Bachelor, Occupation Chauffeur. He married Ena Maud Short on 12th July 1926 and his Dad, John Cheeseman, Occupation Farmer, is annotated as deceased.

From the copy of his death certificate he is Jack Frederick Harry Cheeseman, aged 65, lived at 74 Mere Green Road, Sutton Coldfield when he died, Occupation A Checker (Electrical components manufacturer). He died on 8th June 1954.

His age is clearly wrong on one of these as how can he be 35 in 1926 and then 65 in 1954??

I cannot find a record of his birth anywhere. I think he was actually called John but as that was his Dad's name they called him Jack. The only record I have of his Dad is from the marriage certificate. I don't know if Jack is actually from Warwickshire, it's just his last known address.

Jack could have been known as Jack, Henry, Harry, Jack Frederick, Jack Henry, Jack Harry, John Frederick and all names combined, the third "e" in Cheeseman may well have been omitted too.

If anyone has any idea of how I can trace Jack and his family this would be amazing. My grandad is still alive but doesn't remember much of his Dad and he never met his grandparents on Jacks side.

Thank you.

Hi

Have you looked for him on census records at all?

Hi. Yes, I have tried every version of his name, as well as listing John as his father for the census from 1891 through to 1911. I am now desperately looking forward to seeing the 1921 census. I have also looked at the 1939 register which lists Jack's wife Ena as married and residing with her two sons (my grandad and great-uncle) but Jack is not there, I presume he had gone to war.

It's tricky with so many variations of first names isn't it.

Maybe we could find father John a farmer either on census or a death and work back from there.

Pity we don't know where he was born just where he was living  :(

All we have to go on so the only death in Warwickshire for possible father is 1913
John Cheeseman age 53.  That would make him born 1860 so right age to have fathered your man.

Perhaps we could find him on census to rule in or out as being the farmer father.

Hmm not having much luck I'm afraid.  It's funny he isn't with his wife and children but he could have been working away.

Hello, I have an update from my great Uncle (Jack's eldest son). Jack definitely had siblings, how many still no idea and whether brothers or sisters I don't know. Also he was called up for WW2 in 1939 so this explains why he is not on the 1939 register with Ena and their children. I'm hoping as he did have siblings, this should make him easier to find.

I have their names but haven't done a search for them yet. I can only make out one of the names fully which is annoying.
