Harvey's of Nailsea
« on: Sunday 22 July 18 12:38 BST (UK) »
I have a challenge, I am looking for Joseph Harvey born 1808 in Nailsea, in the 1851 census. He married Hester Ball Christmas Day 1836 and they had Samuel 1836, James 1840 and Charles 1842.  According to records I have Hester's death as 1843 and Joseph married again an Elizabeth Rodway in Cheltenham in 1853 they then moved to Monmouthshire and eventually settled in Cardiff.  Joseph's father was Uriah Harvey and in 1851 Uriah, James and Charles are in the workhouse near Nailsea but this is what is strange there is a Hester Harvey in the workhouse and a note says "husband absconded". I am now wondering if Hester did die in 1843 and if this is Joseph's wife and mother of Samuel, James and Charles, he has committed bigamy.  In 1861 census James and Charles are living with their brother Samuel and his wife as lodgers,I cannot find this Hester Harvey in 1861.Can anyone throw some light on this please.  James is my GGG Grandfather

Thank you, I still don't know if the Hester in 1843 was Joseph's wife.  It seems strange that there is a Hester Harvey in the Workhouse and the children and grandfather are there.  It makes sense why I cannot find a Hester Harvey in 1861 though

His marriage in 1853 describes him as a widower but you would probably need to see the 1843 death for Hester to confirm who she was.

There could be another Hester Harvey in 1851 whose husband had absconded or she died between 1851 and his remarriage but we haven't found the death yet.

Was the Hester in the workhouse the right age/birthplace?

How old was this Hester?

Uriah is with family in 1851, he is in workhouse in 1861.

I can see James and Charles in Long Ashton (Workhouse) in 1851 (both born Backwell).  I am still looking for Esther/Hester in 1851

Sorry I have thrown you a bit.  I Googled Uriah Harvey Nailsea and it came up with the Workhouse inmates in 1855 and that is where they are all listed,  that is where it says that Hester Harvey Husband Absconded Uriah died in the Workhouse in 1866 as far as I can see.  Hester was Christened 18 February 1816 in Cossington

I see where you got it from now but that's 1855 and the census was 1851 so that Hester Harvey may not have been in the workhouse in 1851.
