« on: Monday 23 July 18 09:00 BST (UK) »
I have an Ann Patterson b1801 (unsure where) and died 1841 Upper Denbie. She married a Martin Irving b30/08/1798 Dumfriesshire (I think Kirkpatrick Fleming).
Would love help to find who her family was, parents etc.

Hi nenepops,
Where is Upper Denbie, please?
Did Ann and Martin have children? If so can you give us names and years of birth if you have that info? She may have called some of her children after her parents.

Looby :)

On the 1841 Census there is a property called Upper Denbie at Dalton in Dumfrieshire.
There are 2 people called John Beattie aged 88 and Margaret Beattie aged 50 recorded at this place.

However the previous household is called Denbie and there are a family of Patersons living there -PATERSON  William  M  50   Agricultural Labourer   Dumfries-shire
 PATERSON Mary      F 50                                    Dumfries-shire
PATERSON Mary       F  25  Agricultural Labourer   Dumfries-shire
 PATERSON Rachel    F 15 Agricultural Labourer     Dumfries-shire
PATERSON Janet      F  11                                   Dumfries-shire
MACKIE William       M 20   Agricultural Labourer  Outside Census County (1841)
IRVING Mary          F  4m                                   Dumfries-shire

Note the name of the baby. No relationships to the head of house was recorded on 1841 Census (sadly). But you must wonder if this was Ann Patterson/Paterson/Irving''s daughter. Perhaps she died in childbirth or certainly shortly after the birth.

Looby :)

Thank you.
But these wouldn't be her parents would they? Only ask as they seem to be too young? 1841 Ann would've been 40 when she died!

Ages on 1841 Census were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 0 or 5 - so this couple potentially  could be as old as 54 if they knew their correct age in the first place  !

However I don't think they are Ann's parents but there is a strong likelihood they are her brother, sister-in-law and their family.
I notice the baby is called Mary. Ann and Martin Irving already have a daughter called Mary (you note her being born circa 1824) and that girl appears to be still alive and living with her father and siblings on 1841 Census at Middlebie :-\
It was common to use the name of a deceased child again for another baby but not so common to re-use the name of a surving child. Maybe the name was a temporary name .

I would say your next stage would be to find William Paterson on 1851 Census (should give place of birth) , then hopefully find his death cert (if he died after 1855) which should have his parents names. That could all help to you establishing Ann's parentage .

Looby  :)
PS. Bear in mind William could be another relative of Ann's (cousin/uncle  ::) )

You're welcome. Good luck.

You might find 1851 Census transcription on here (just don't be to exact with ages) - http://www.maxwellancestry.com/recordsets.aspx
