Dartmoor Prison Barracks
« on: Tuesday 24 July 18 18:14 BST (UK) »
Hi

My GG Grandfather was a prison warder at Dartmoor prison around the 1860's/70's and according to the 1871 Census he was living(with his family) in the "barracks". I presume the buildings them selves have long since gone, but I was wondering if someone had any idea where they were. There looks to be  a road nearby called "Barracks Rd" so I presume they were along that road somewhere, however I'd like to pin point the location I bit more accurately, as it looks to be quite a long road.

Can anyone help please?

Regards

Stewart

I am just wondering if you may get some help by contacting the Dartmoor Prison Museum.

https://www.dartmoor-prison.co.uk/location_of_Dartmoor_Prison.php

There is the facility to contact them either by message or phone.

Wow, brilliant!! Thanks hanes teulu, that pinpoints it perfectly :D. Slap bang in the middle of Barracks road.

Comparing it with the current aerial view, it doesn't look like any of the buildings have survived. Pity the Google car didn't travel the whole length of the road  ::)

You have been so helpful thankyou, hanes teulu  :D

Looking at one of the descriptions, there doesn't seem to have been many of the flats for the warders & families. So my GG Grandfather & his eight children may have been a special case.

Looking at the refurb job they done on it, I reckon its fair old upgrade from the 1860's  ;D

As for the side by side map,...... that'll keep me occupied for hours, & suffice to so i'ts now in my Favorites column  :)

Thank you so much, once again
