51st regiment 1790-1805
« on: Tuesday 24 July 18 19:46 BST (UK) »
My ancestor joined the 51st in April 1790. Child born 1805 in Ceylon - he was a sergeant at this time. I know his wife's name including maiden name.
According to regimental history the 51st was mainly overseas during the period. His wife has a British name Johanna Day but the puzzle is where did they marry?
Could a soldier marry when serving abroad - would he have required permission?

Yes and usually yes (if he married without permission then the army wouldn't recognise her).  Findmypast has some records of overseas marriages in that time frame.  The regiment was certainly in Ceylon in 1805.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

yes they were in Ceylon from 1799. But would there have been English ladies on the island for soldiers to meet?

There were military (3500 in 1805) and British civil servants stationed in Ceylon as it was a Crown Colony from 1796  In addition the East India Company's tentacles stretched there too..  Miss Day would seem to have been the daughter of one of those.
