This is probably quite simple to answer, for you military experts. One of my relatives signed for the

following in 1917. But what is a Housewife? The mind boggles ;D ;D ;D ;D

They needed to do running repairs to their uniforms, such as sewing on a button or put on a new stripe, unless they could talk one of the females e.g. a nurse etc to do it for them :D  My father used to do his own repairs in WW 2, he was quite good with a needle ;D

Pronounced "Hussif".  Still got the thimble from my 1950s version!  Pattern changed over the years, Google images.

My brother was one of the last to do National Service, he says he still has his housewife somewhere.  It seems you can still buy them. Does that mean they are no longer part of standard issue kit ?🙁
