The asylum theory was based on census entries for residents being initials only which would have accounted for her not being found under her full name.

It would be interesting to see who reported her death.  The fact she can’t be found under Sexton in 1881 & 1891 could suggest she was living with another man

I now have the birth and death certificates for baby Thomas, and Mary's death certificate.
Still waiting for her marriage certificate, although I do know she amd Patrick married on 23 October.

The address where Mary died could have been her home, or a relatives, but impossible to say whose.  Her brother-in-law (sister's husband) notified her death, and it appears that she had been ill for over a year.  Doesn't help with the fact that I can't find her, or her husband in previous years though, yet!

Hello again,

Have you checked the death address with 1901 census?
Was it her brother in law’s address?

Hi Heywood, no, both addresses have different occupants in 1901.  They all seemed to move quite a bit, always in the same area though, and adjacent streets.

I'm not sure where Mary's brother-in-law was in 1901, but he wasn't at home.   His wife, one of Mary's sisters, had their father living with her, and on census day at least, also neices and nephews.  So - my own grandmother and Gt Gt grandfather.

I'm now leaning to, but without any proof as yet, Patrick Sexton having lived in Chorley.  Said to have been born in West Bromwich, no birth found yet, but if anyone is willing to look, and find, I shall be very pleased.

He's still vanished though!

Susan

Thanks Ann and Heywood.

Yes Ann, that is the family in Chorley.  I've been making a list from the 1851 to 81 censuses and checking the deaths.  I was going to check the cemetery records in Chorley to see if there were any clues, but think I'm on the wrong track now.

The Southport 1891 seems to prove my theory totally wrong Heywood, so back to the drawing board for me.  That Patrick may be the one who I've previously found, dying in 1920, Ormskirk area if I remember correctly.

I'll have to wait for the marriage certificate to see what address it gives for Patrick.
