History of Cottage in Cackle Street/Frederick Road, Hastings
« on: Friday 27 July 18 17:27 BST (UK) »
Hi guys,

I wonder if anyone can help me please with regards to a cottage that I am moving into that is on Frederick Road (used to be Cackle Street). The information that the present owner has is that it was possibly built c1805 and known as The Gatehouse and is one of two cottages that were built around that time, the other one still exists as well. Its a lovely little cottage and the present owner and myself are interested in finding out more of its history or past owners.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Ann

Not as early as 1805 but look on the nls site https://maps.nls.uk/ & put Hastings in search field. You may get maps as early as 1850. Also search the British Newspaper Archive for the cottage name, and contact the local history society. You may also be able to find the cottage name on censuses [findmypast allow you to search by address] to find out who lived there.
Seeking: RC baptism Philip Murray Feb ish 1814 ? nr Chatham Kent.

Some history of the turnpike road

The toll house would presumably have been built with the road, as tolls were charged from the outset.

ADDED: Something about the tollhouses in Sussex.

You may be able to add your cottage to this list as I cannot see a tollhouse in Ore on it.

Thank you  :) this is quite an interesting read as I never knew about the turnpikes. Maybe this is where the cottage gets The Gatehouse name from.
