2nd Battn Border Regiment
« on: Saturday 28 July 18 11:43 BST (UK) »
Can anyone point me towards any records for the above. I have John Alfred HIRST who was born on the 6th October 1881 and, on his wedding certificate in 1915, shows his occupation as Private in the 2nd Battn Border Regiment, reservist. His wife, Nellie, remarried in 1920 so assume he had died but I cannot trace any military records on Ancestry or Findmypast nor can I find a death record.

Sorry I meant to add that I did find an entry, soldier No 12040, but his place of birth and death date wont fit. His last child was born October 1918.

This is John Alfred Hirst of 9 Leverton Street Sheffield?  He was working in a munitions factory in Sheffield in 1916:

"John Alfred Hirst, of 9. Leverton Street, who appeared in khaki, was charged with refusing to obey orders, was a blacksmith's helper in one of the munition firms......"

(Sheffield papers, 15 and 16 August 1916)

He's with a Beatrice Hirst in September 1939.

There's a likely marriage to Beatrice Sheppard in Sheffield in 4Q 1916.

Some doubt has been cast on his birth date, a marriage document for 1915 gives his age as 29, suggesting a birthdate 1885/6.

The Leeds Mercury of 25 February 1915 has a photo with this caption;

"Of these four members of the 2nd Border Regiment, all have been killed in action except Private Alfred Hirst, London-road, Sheffield, the man on the right standing up, who is one of five warrior brothers, and who has had the thrilling experience of being buried up to the neck in a trench as a result of the explosion of a Jack Johnson"
