Scots Greys Sergeant - Samuel West Circa 1850's
« on: Saturday 28 July 18 12:39 BST (UK) »
Hi,

We are trying to find information for our family tree on Samuel West.
He was born in Glasgow around 1838. He died around 1872.  Not sure if he died in battle or not.

The information passed through the generations of our family is that he served as a Sergeant (Major?) and we are looking for information as to whether he died in action or otherwise.  We are not sure of years or locations of his service.

If anyone has some leads we can look further into his service records it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ros.

Very quick first look on one of the subscription sites finds him in Dublin as a trooper in 1861 and in 1871 as a corporal also in Ireland.  The regiment at that time known as the 2nd Dragoons (Royal North British).  They didn't get the Scots Greys title until 1877. His discharge papers as a sergeant after almost 18 years in 1878 are also on line. (Findmypast).  He was discharged unfit and didn't serve overseas.

You may wish to get a sub from FindMyPast or see it on line at a library?

G'day Max,

Thanks for your help.  I managed to find and get the information about his time in the 2nd Dragoons.

I haven't been able to find the info about his discharge in 1878.  Could you please let me know what search criteria you had to get to that?

Thanks again for your help.

Ros.

Greetings

On FindMyPast - found him first by looking at the 1861 Army World Wide entries with his name and regiment (2nd Dragoons) - this gave me his number - 465.  Then to the military section using just his name and service number you get 3 hits, his discharge papers, the 1861 and the 1871.
