South America is a big place and there are 13 countries [more if you kick in Central America].  If you get his death certificate or maybe an obituary, you might be able to narrow the search to a specific country.

Assuming his parents were British nationals, try the overseas births index via Find My Past.
Also Family Search is worth a look: their S American record sets are growing and I've found records from Chile, Peru and Brazil that were helpful.

Some more info Henry Alexander Simpson b 1932 in Union, mother was lettitia Diana born in east berbice-corentyne (Guyana)
Henry came over to England to look for work (not sure when)
Apparently mothers surname used still hoping for more info
