James Peters 1823 Penzance
« on: Saturday 28 July 18 15:12 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find a baptism for James Peters born 1823 Penzance, Cornwall.
His father was called Thomas Peters.

He married Ellen Williams in Liverpool in 1849.
He was a Mariner as was his father, the only census I have for him is 1851, when he was
at 26 Upper Pit street, Liverpool, his birth place is listed as Penzance, Cornwall.

He died at sea in 1856.

I've tried several times to locate his baptism but failed to find anything matching the date in
Penzance, or finding more info on his father Thomas Peters ( I only know he was called Thomas
from the Marriage banns).

Grateful for any help

The further away from home people go, the more general they tend to be in describing their place of birth?

It's certainly true for me! I grew up in the North Somerset village/town of Portishead.
Means nothing to most people outside the West of England, So I often say I am from Bristol. Or sometimes Somerset ;D

Bearing that in mind, there is this baptism (from Cornwall-OPC-Database):
25th December 1820 at St Agnes
James Peters, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Peters of Blackwater.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Thanks for the reply

Yes, I have seen that one, and have thought it could be the right one
Blackwater is not that far from Penzance, and as you say for people far from his home,
he might of said Penzance because more people would have heard of it rather than Blackwater.

It does list his profession as Miner? when I have him as Mariner

So Im still not too sure if this is the right one?

As someone who lives far from Cornwall, I can only look at the maps, as I looked at Blackwater
the name Penstranze caught my eye, could this place have been miskaken for Penzance I wonder??
