Just to add that it's not a Chrome/Windows thing as I am getting the same thing on Windows 10/Edge.   Believe it started around a week ago.

Interesting, Annette, as I've Windows 10 also. Not sure exactly when it started as things have been hectic here and I've not been online as much.

That suggests it's Windows that's the problem.  I think it's been happening for 2-3 weeks now.  Oddly, if I go on the laptop 11.30pm onwards everything is fine, but during the day it's just like being on dial-up rather than so-called fibre optic broadband.  I know cable is available in the villages around where I live because the residents have been complaining about the pavements being dug up, but as far as I know it hasn't yet come to the larger area - and I can't even check on Virgin's site, because the internet is not working well enough for me to be on here and check another site at the same time. >:(

It is impossible to know....

Have you Windows Updates on or off?

Have you set Wifi to Metered connection?

I have fast Wifi and last update took over 2 hours!

Is your Wifi slow because the Update is trying to come though on what might take 10 times or more as long as mine did??

Are you getting updates DIRECT from Microsoft?

Or from Computers nearby?

If so...then maybe you are also using your Wifi allowance to update other computers nearby!

Hence crawling Wifi.

Maybe the problem isn't with Microsoft but by your update settings  ??

I know I don't upload to other PC's on Internet...but even though this says 500 GB allowed, it doesn't matter because it should sit with 0 used!!

Simply because I've set my Wifi to Metered!

My Wifi allowance is actually  Unlimited for the month...   ;D

If you've 30Gb a month.....how much are you using sending stuff to other PC's??  ? ?

The effect seems to be associated with the browser in use.

I don't use the "unread posts" view, but look at the relevant board.

If I use IE11, going back from the message to the list of topics shows me the list just as it was before I looked, with "New" flag. If I then hit refresh, or if I'd clicked on the board name at the top, the "New" disappears.

If I use Edge, going back from the message to the list of topics appears to do a refresh without me asking. "New" disappears, and sometimes a fresh topic has moved to the top of the list.

Edge has done it this way since before Win10 was released.

I don't know of any setting we can tweak to change either browser. If you are using another brand, your mileage may vary.

Just to annoy me, Edge is now behaving in the same way as I described for IE11.

All I've done is install the latest Win10 cumulative update - KB4340917.

There used to be one "Patch Tuesday" each month. Now there are a minimum of 4, with at least two "Cumulative Updates" for Win10. This one has a lower ID number than the previous one for July, but a higher ID number than the first one for July.  ???

Just to chip in: I use Chrome with W10 all the time and I have never experienced any problems. Specifically not with the back button on Rootschat. Not sure whether this is relevant but I have automatic updates to both W10 and Chrome.
