Looking for death record of Sarah Jane McCarron
« on: Monday 30 July 18 16:56 BST (UK) »
On the  - New Zealand, Passenger Lists, 1839-1973 on Family Search.
Sarah McCarron details are recorded as follows

Sarah Mccarron
New Zealand, Archives New Zealand, Passenger Lists
Name   Sarah Mccarron
Event Type   Immigration
Event Date   16 Apr 1879
Event Place   Lyttelton, New Zealand
Gender   Female
Departure Port   Plymouth
Departure Place   Plymouth
Departure Date   1879
Arrival Port   Lyttelton
Ship Name   Stadt Haarlem
Arrival Place   Lyttelton

On the image to correspond with the record Sarah's name has been crossed out and in the column it says died at Depot.  I understand this to mean she died before they left port at Plymouth.  Would there be a death record in Plymouth, (Devon) of her death. Or would there be a record else where. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-D1VS-929?i=27&cc=1609792

Thanks for any information.

If she died in England or Wales there would be an entry on freebmd  but there isn't

www.freebmd.org.uk

Could it mean at departure?  She may have died shortly after they set sail

Thanks.  Did they keep records of people who died on the passenger ships?  Angela

A few pages on, two children in another family are marked as "died on voyage" and "died at depot" separately, so I would agree that "died at depot" suggests died either in Plymouth before leaving, or while in port (/quarantine?) on arrival.

I think I have found her under a misspelling.

There are at least two infants marked "died at depot" - Sarah Mccarron, aged three weeks, and Harriet Port - aged 1 month.  I can't see a death under these names on freebmd.

However, there are two deaths in Plymouth in March quarter of 1879, Vol 5b, page 219  (being on the same page number suggests they were registered in close proximity, quite possibly together):

Sarah Jane McCann, aged 0 (<1 year)
Fanny Port, aged 0 (<1 year)

Also, there is no birth record for either of these children in Plymouth or indeed anywhere in England/Wales. I suggest these are Sarah McCarron and Harriet Port as listed on the ship list - perhaps both registered by somebody not their families hence the name problems.

Newspaper report under the heading THE ENGLISH MAIL

Re the … Depot … (adding as noted in jorose's post  :) )

In this cutting from the newspaper in Victoria (Australia) the Stadt Haarlem was detained in Plymouth for alterations … “The emigrants meanwhile are greatly dissatisfied because they are not allowed to leave the depot.   To me, that is indicating the DEPOT referred to is the one at Plymouth in England.   In New South Wales (Australia) around that era, the passengers disembarked and were taken to a DEPOT ... barracks/accommodation/lodgings  and from that facility they were then met by their future employer and then directed to their new employment locations...
