William Power, born about 1819 Ireland
« on: Thursday 02 August 18 11:48 BST (UK) »
My husband's gg-grandfather, William Power, originated in Ireland, but we have no idea where.

We can first find him at Tredegar House, Bassaleg, Monmouthshire in 1851, where he was listed as a servant. No place of birth, age was first written as 34, then as 30.

By 1861, he was living in Duffryn, Bassaleg, a married man aged 43, born Ireland. He had married in Norbiton, Surrey, on 1 Jan 1856, and gave his father as John Power, forester. Said he was 38.

In 1871, he was living on the Tredegar estate, aged 52, again birthplace is just "Ireland".

He died in 1879. I have no burial, nor any baptisms for his children (William Edward 1857, Mary Ellen 1859, Rosina Maria 1862, and John Maximilian 1864), so no idea whether he is a Catholic or not.

Do I have any chance of tracking him back to Ireland??

I've always assumed not, but thought it might be worth asking!

I noticed through Google that there was another thread on Rootschat for St Wooloo's Cemetery, Newport and how to get SKS to look up a burial as there doesn't seem to be an index. Perhaps admin could help you.
