Just found Charlotte in 1881 with her parents - I see she's a soldier's wife. Soldiering sometimes runs in families, so I wonder if Henry and Alice might be in military birth indexes? (I have no experience of these.)

Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

I agree Carol.   I have spent far too long on this without actually being able to offer any help whatsoever, but somewhere I did find a possible Budd  marriage with someone by the name of Woolley.  So it did occur to me at the time that it just could possibly be a mis-spelling of that.  Though since I found that marriage, I couldn't then re-locate it, so thought best to keep quiet!

Just found a Henry Budd in 1871, a Private, at Raglan Barracks, Devonport,  which would fit in with Arthurk's finding of Charlotte as a soldier's wife in 1881.  Looks like '2nd Bn 18th Regt'.

There are some attestation papers for a Henry Budd on Ancestry:

Attested 11 October 1870,  Portsmouth, age 18.  (If it is our man, he is actually 16).

Further document gives service abroad as Bermuda 30 Oct 1880 - 22 Nov 1883.
