Does anyone think that the tablet will need a suitable family history app to read the data on the hard drives.

Derek, try ebay, "normal size usb to micro-ports to use exteral hardrive on tablet".  I get lots of hits showing you exactly what you need. You can get connectors for just, about everything these days. You can even get a Swiss Army knife that has a USB stick on it.

I think the cable you need is a "on the go" cable.  I keep one in the case for my 500mb backup drive. I backup my tablet to it once a week.

On the Samsung Tab 3 (a few years old now) you simply pull the lead out of the UK Mains voltage reducer plug and we are left with a USB plug which fits a USB PC socket.

My Tab seems to charge automatically from the pc USB socket too and still works okay with original lead and UK Mains reducer.

Tablet Reliability
However, my Wife (purchased hers same day) has had to renew her battery recently (wouldn't charge). Also had running problems, so she had to reset hers to Factory Settings, losing her files & pics saved and has also had 2 replacement leads. Her first Mains Reducer failed within 12 months & was replaced.

Seems those Tablet microsockets & plug connecting leads need very gentle precise treatment, if they are to last.

According to an online video, it seems some have managed to fracture the microsocket connections inside the Tablet. Okay, if you can snap it open, locate a microscopic fracture, can use a soldering iron to solder tiny micro contacts.

PC
A pc expert managed to salvage my pc files, when my pc Hard Drive failed. I don't know how easy it is for a pc expert to work with a Tablet?

I wouldn't use a Tablet in place of a PC.

Some family history stuff, is in old books (now online) 50MB plus, or on the TNA website as 250 to 300MB (scanned microfilm reels in one PDF) but my Tablet won't handle download sizes 50MB up to 300MB

It won't open all MS Word documents, unless it can convert it.

My Tablet will open some smaller PDFs, but not all small PDFs.
