Non-conformist register declaration
« on: Friday 03 August 18 14:35 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate some help with the missing words on the certification of this non-conformist register.

We certify that this is one of
the Registers or Records
deposited in the ** ** **
office, pursuant to the Act of
** 4th Victoria Cap 92

I am guessing that the last bit must relate to an Act of Parliament in nrelation to lodging copies of PR's.

In addition, would this wording indicate that it was a copy & not the original?

thanks

Office, pursuant to the Act of

It’s nothing to do with parish registers. It's a standard rubric included in certain non-parochial registers in relation to the Non-Parochial Registers Act of 1840 (4. Vict. c. 92).

The registers should originally have been deposited with the Registrar-General in 1837. Explanation here ...
https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Non-Parochial_Registers_in_England_and_Wales#Non-Parochial_Registers_Acts_1840_and_1857

They should normally have been original registers rather than copies, but that's not to say that copies didn't exist as well.

The registers that were deposited in 1837 are in TNA's catalogue, mostly in classes RG4, RG5 and RG6.

Their guide, which also has details of similar deposits, is at

Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Thanks, so in 1837 a request was made for non-parochial registers to be deposited but it then became mandatory in 1840.

I believe the 1840 Act relates to the authentication of these registers, and to their admissibility as evidence in a court of law, rather than to their deposit in 1837. See the link I posted above?

I did misread part of that, however it seems that in 1840 (or was it 1857) a copy of the register was made and deposited.

thanks again
