William Revill 1901 census please
« on: Friday 03 August 18 15:48 BST (UK) »
On the 1891 census William Revill is shown as follows

Lyon Street, Eccleston, Prescot, Lancashire, England

William Revill Head Widower Male 40 1851    Ireland Copper Furnaceman
Therance    Revill Son    Single Male 14    1877 St Helens Lancashire, England Bottle Makers Apprentice
Transcription error (name is Kearns)
Mary Revill Daughter    Female 10    1881 St Helens Lancashire, England Scholar

William died September qtr 1909 but I can't find him in the 1901 census. I am also trying to find where in Ireland William was born.

Can anyone help please ?

Have you tried the Irish 1901 in case he had gone visiting?

Thank you Carole W for trying to help.

I have Kearns details through the cenus records but I am really stuck on his father William. On both the 1881 and 1891 census he is shown as born in Ireland but not where in Ireland and the year of birth varies on both. This is going to make it difficult to try and find if he was in Ireland on the 1901 census.

hi Dinkey,

I am just wondering if you have his death certificate please, which would give his place of death.

I realise this might be a hospital address, which would be unhelpful -- but if he died at a normal house, we could at least check that address in 1901 to see if he was there at that time.

Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Also -- if you get his marriage cert (to Bridget Cane) Q/E June 1870 Prescot Reg District --- Vol 8b page 908 ---- (if you haven't already got it) -- that would give you his father's name.

On the marriage her name is spelt Cane -- on the birth register for children it is spelt Kane, although you probably know that.

Sorry if I seem to be suggesting you spend money - but at the moment I cannot find a baptism for any William Revill in Ireland around 1850 on the RootsIreland website. A father's name may just help even if we have to laboriously search on William -- with his father's first name to see if a mistranscription has occurred.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Hi Pennines

Thanks for trying to help

It is such a shame that the 1881/1891 just shows born Ireland (very unhelpful)

I think you are right that the only way is going to be purchasing certificates.

Dinky -- in many, many cases of Irish born people the enumerators merely recorded a birthplace of Ireland. Often though -- if you look at neighbours you may just spot an Irish person who has mentioned a county.
The Irish people did tend to live close to each other, and had often been friends, relatives back home. Someone came over, wrote to a friend etc -- so you do get people from the same Irish areas living close to each other in England. It's worth just checking the adjacent census pages just in case -- although your William's birth place will still be 'up in the air'.

Revell or variant does not seem to be an Irish name -- it could be French. The extract on the origin of the name can be found here;

www.surnamedb.com --- just insert the surname in the search box.

This mentions that many people of this surname were to be found in Yorkshire - and I just wonder if his father may have been a soldier serving in Ireland, who stayed there on discharge - or married there and brought his family back. (I'm making things up now!!)
