Annie Millie Carter b. c1854 England , married 1875 Australia.
« on: Thursday 02 August 18 08:06 BST (UK) »
Hi! I am a first time user of rootschat.com so please let me know if I'm completely lost, but I was wondering if you could help me find some more information on my Great Great Grandmother Millie Annie/Millie Ann/Annie Millie/Ann Millie Carter. She was born about 1854 in Bradfield Berkshire England, married Horatio William King in Sydney, Australia 5 April 1875 and died in either 1930 or 1931. Would love to know more about her (parents, arrival to Australia etc). Thank you!

Hi helpful rootschatters!
I was wondering if anyone could help me decipher this word (messily underlined in blue). Its from my Great Great Grandparents' marriage record, Sydney 1875. I'm assuming it's the bride's mother's maiden name. Thank you in advance!

It could also be Brown. (Compare, for example, the first r in Carter.)

I wonder if it says Banns,ie the marriage was after the requisite three readings of the Banns, one each week for the three preceding Sundays?
The brackets are square, which is a bit confusing.
I think it may be correctly Bans not Banns as I have put it
Viktoria.

Whatever it is, it is the mother's maiden name.

Winslass

I read it as Binns too (before reading Winslass' interpretation)

 :)

May I please confirm that on New South Wales Marriage registrations, the underlined word is for the Mother of the Bride's maiden name.

I see that NSW BDM has recorded the 1875 marriage twice on their online index, same reference number, just variation on the spelling of the Bride's surname (CARTER v CARLER).   Sadly, the clergy's scribble is typical.   (#438/1875)
https://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/Pages/family-history/family-history.aspx

I see that Horatio William KING (the groom) was born in NSW, in 1848.   I am still looking through my offline NSW resources for any info on Millie Annie CARTER, in case I have her mother's maiden name recorded there.

I can see BROWN, BINNS, BOWN, BOWEN, etc  and ROWEN etc and other variations from the image attached.

Sorry I cannot be more confident at the moment.  I will keep looking.
