No you are not barking up the wrong Tree.

Spellings of surnames were very fluent and the names were often just written down as heard esp. by Census enumerators.
Also people were not all literate and able to check how their surname had been spelt on documents.

Al the Census I posted for the Family is correct, Georges Fathers occp is right etc.

If you look at all the info posted by me and others the name is down as;
Sargeant
Seigant
Sargant
Seargeant

1901 Anc has them as;
George Sargent   33
Julia J Sargent   33
George Sargent   11
William Sargent   9
May Sargent   7
Harry Sargent   6
John Sargent   4
Emily Sargent   2

Bumblebee posted this Census earlier and on the site he used the name has been transcribed as SARGEANT.

So the transcribers have both spelt it differently!

An example of records for George 1889's Brothers records;

England & Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index, 1916-2005
William T Sargeant***
1911 England Census
William Sarjent***
England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1916-2007
William T Sargeant****
England & Wales, Civil Registration Birth Index, 1837-1915
William Sargeant****

Various spellings of his surname.

He would have been the 1921 Marriage witness I would say.

1911 Census George 1889's Parents are under SARJENT

Apologies - my mistake - surname on original image for 1901 census states "Sargent".

(trish - I'm female  :o :o )
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.
He/she who never made a mistake, never made anything.

Appleyard - WRY

It is confusing
