Bitton Parish Registers
« on: Saturday 04 August 18 11:43 BST (UK) »
There seems to be a gap in the records of Bitton Parish Registers from about 1674 to about 1754.  Does anyone know if these are available somewhere and able to be accessed?

Thanks
Mary

Bitton family website

http://www.bittonfamilies.com

This gives a list of transcripts from records

'About the Transcriptions
The source of these transcriptions is the St Mary's Bitton Registers.  Original documents are held at the Bristol Records Office.

Our Bitton transcriptions currently start at about 1670.  We have good coverage of Bitton marriages, in particular, with a complete listing of all marriages 1723 to 1760 and a complete surname index for marriages 1760 to 1781.  We have a complete listing of all Bitton baptisms from 1779 to 1813'

Burials: 1678 to 1685
1686 to 1690 - records missing
1691-to 1812 - selected names extracted

Christenings/Baptisms
1670 to 1779
Selected names extracted as well as a few random names
etc etc

Marriages 1674 onwards

etc
Just go down the list

-----

The Forest of Dean website

http://www.forest-of-dean.net

Has Gloucestershire Marriage Allegations and Marriage Bonds - in total they have transcribed
758/764 residence: Bitton and the earliest is 1637.  If you just put in the residence : Bit and not the full name - there is 764 - Just put an % in the name search - as Surnames are spelt in many ways!

If you are not a Member of the above Website - just have to register.  The Marriage Allegations are under the heading : RESOURCES

Hope this helps

Hi STG
Many thanks for the link. I can access the 'Registers of Bitton' which give baptisms 1572-1674 and Bristol Diocese Registers which start at 1754, but I am looking for baptisms around 1700 - 1720 and these are in the registers held by Bristol Archives.  I don't have access to those and as I am in Australia unable to visit the Records Office.  Ancestry only has a very few earlier records but not the ones I am looking for.

Hi Capetown

Many thanks for the information and links.  Unfortunately the Forest of Dean site didn't have anything helpful and whilst the Bitton Families is a great site, the records of christenings consists of 'Selected names extracted as well as a few random names' and I had no luck there.  There were just a few earlier records, from 1692 - 1724 but the remainder was after that date.
I am looking for Christenings between about 1700 and 1720 in Bitton or possibly St. George, Bristol. I understand these records are with the Bristol Archives but I do not have access to those and Ancestry does not have those early records.

? What surname are you researching.

OSBORNE*/SHORT/SHARP/ROGERS/GAY (*occupation: Blacksmiths) from Bitton is a
our  family  line and quoting from a Reseacher's notes years ago...

'St George was once a semi rural parish on the north east side of Bristol, which has now been absorbed into "great Bristol" as the latter has spawled outwards.

Apart from the usual activities of a local Blacksmith (mending and making tools and ironwork and shoeing horses) there was a big demand for blacksmiths at the coalpits.  The whole area around Kingswood was a big coalmining area'

Bitton area also had many 'Hat makers' - who used Mercury and the vapours often turned them 'mad'..... Hence... Mad as a Hatter.

May be Bitton Parish History Group could help

I am trying to confirm -

(1)   the date of birth and father of Samuel Caines (Cain/Caine/Kayne). His burial record gives his dob as 1716 but this does not fit in with his marriage/children. Many other trees on Ancestry have his parents as Henry Caines and Ann Signey and dob as 1706 but I can find no source for this and 1706 is 6 years after his parents marriage.  (No previous marriage for Henry)

(2) the parents of Joshua Caynes/Cains dob about 1700, Many other trees have his parents as Henry Caines and Mary Berrat but again no sources.

There was a large Cains family in Bitton and several members, along with others, were in the notorious Cock Road Gang and either executed or transported.  I am trying to confirm the connections between the various branches .

It's just a case of christening records being available during that time - early 1700s.

According to Phillimore there are copies of original registers at the library of the Society of Genealogists. www.sog.org.uk.

I presume they are in London. Might be worth an e-mail if there's an addy or writing to them. Better have a look at the Website.
