Hi Jan

If I can come in on this thread, I have a list of marriage licences issued by the Wilts FHS and Daniel New is amongst them.
It Reads;
Daniel New, bac, Reading St.Lawrence, to Lucy Wootton, Widow, Reading St.Mary
Dated 4-7-1826 Reading St.Mary.

They married in Reading St.Mary (The Minster) church, 8-7-1826

Thank you Alan,
That confirms absolutely everything for me now, thanks so much.

Looks like Daniel New the Convict, has come down another family line of the News in Ashbury.
Guess unless we have someone that comes up with a reasonable DNA match, we won't know exactly.

Thank you.

Hi Jan,

Pleased I could help.

There are quite a few parishes in Reading - here are some;
St.Mary (Castle Street), All Saints (Downshire Square), Christchurch, Greyfriars, St.Giles, St.laurence and more.

I used to live just outside Reading so knew the area quite well.

I took an interest in the "New" line because I have a Lucy New bapt. 1795 in Brightwalton and was following your thread in case it was connected with mine. This Lucy married a Thomas Messenger in 1814 in Welford, which is not too far from Newbury, but sadly is buried in 1832 aged 37. Lucy was a grandchild of Francis & Ann New which I haven't followed up on.

Alan,
That is interesting, so many News around the area.   Our line goes back a long way, where the surname was "Nue".   Have you done a DNA test?   Have come up with a few cousins we weren't aware of, which was quite interesting, as a result of children born out of wedlock, some of those New family members.

Unfortunately there are trees on Ancestry that are incorrect, people gone right off the track.

This Daniel New the convict settled near to us in NSW Australia, so we would love to know more about him, so that maybe we can link him up.    To this day, there could be descendants living nearby to us, unknown distant cousins.

Alan,
Back again, note your family names "Belcher" and "Saunders", our family names.
The Belchers are related to me, they came from Newbury, and other areas in Berkshire,
one of my great aunts married a Belcher and her son lives near Sydney.

The Saunders family came from Tiverton, Devon originally, prior to moving to London.

Jan,
It is indeed a small world, my mother's father was a Belcher who came from Hagbourne, Berks and my mother's mother was a Saunders. They originally came from Barrow Gurney, Somerset and I have managed to trace them back to the early 1700 in & around Bath, Keynsham areas.

The male side only goes  back to early 1820s when my 2x g/grandfather was the "natural s/o  of a single woman" in West Hanney, Berks, where I can only trace the mother a little way. I know nothing about her -  whether she married or when/where she died.

One of my "Saunders" uncles emigrated to NZ in the early 1900s and I don't know of any "Belchers"
who came to Oz.

Regarding the trees on Ancy - I have to agree. It seems people see a name and then add it to their tree without any searches being made. I've seen some  where they are born in Berks marry in the USA and are buried back in the UK with census records showing they never left.
