As James SPENCE was a marine engineer it is unlikely that there would be an immigration record for him but if he worked the east coast you may find him on crew lists here:

1871 in Lanarkshire we have;
5 Crookston Street
Jane Sporic, 27, Wife, Husband at Sea, born Bruff, Renfrewshire
James Sporic, 4, Son
JANE Sporic, 1, Daug, born Glasgow, Renfrewshire
Joseph W Sporic   ,
Charles Jones, 16, Visitor, born Forfarshire

Trish,

1871 on SP appears to run over 2 pages

SPENCE JANE
1871
27
644/9 74/ 1 Tradeston Lanark

SPENCE JAMES
1871
4
644/9 74/ 1 Tradeston Lanark

SPENCE JANE
1871
1
644/9 74/ 2 Tradeston Lanark

SPENCE ISABELLA M  ??? (Likely M(a)cDonald)
1871

Strangely, I didn't pick up a Charles Jones 16 in either the Spence household or elsewhere?

There's a Charles Jones 32 & a John Chalres (sic) Jones 19 both elsewhere?

Update: I found these on Scotlandspeople but the last two don't give parents names. Is there any way to search for them?

If any of the people you're looking at, died in Scotland post 1855 their parents names including mms should be on their DC if the info. was known to the informant of the death.
