St George, Hanover Square, 1818 marriage: clergy?
« on: Sunday 05 August 18 17:51 BST (UK) »
On 12 May 1818 George Hogg of King's Lynn was married to Margaret Ainslie at St George's, by licence.
I am trying to discover the name of the officiating minister which seems to read "B.E. Ely".
I should be grateful for any help in discovering whether this was the correct name, and was he a curate.
It is too early for Crockford's directories and other sources I have looked at.
Thank you,
Ainslie
ADDED: since posting the above text I have found that it was probably the Bishop of Ely who performed the marriage, his Christian names being Bowyer Edward, surname Sparke, and as customary he signed with his diocese as surname.
Any comments on this would still be welcome.

According to an announcement in The Morning Chronicle of 16th May 1818 they were married by the Bishop of Ely.

It seems his name was Bowyer Edward Sparke, hence his signature B(owyer) E(dward) Ely.
