trying to understand german death notice for Wilhelm Diedrich
« on: Sunday 05 August 18 23:20 BST (UK) »
Hi,
A relative and I are trying to decipher this. We believe it is a death notice for a relation in Germany. I had some help translating this from a friend who speaks and reads German. It appears to be a death notice for Wilhelm Diedrich. There are a few things that were unclear to us. #1.  It seems to say that Auguste Diedrich is both Wilhelm's daughter in law and daughter? #2. Could Schur be her maiden name: Geb. Schur; born Schur? #3. Why would her date of birth be in a death notice for someone else? #4. During what time period were death notices like these written? There wasn't a date written anywhere on the notice that I could see.

This is the translation we came up with:
This morning, about 9, deceased after long, painful, suffering, my rather good man and father, Wilhelm Diedrich in his 44th year. All those participating with deep mourning along with Auguste Diedrich, born daughter in law and daughter. The burial will be found on Friday, the 3rd of July, afternoon, held about 3.

I would really appreciate it if anyone could help us figure this out or provide us with any additional insight. Thank you so much.
Judy

Hi

You misunderstood some things.

Auguste Diedrich, née Schnur, was the wife of the deceased,
and they had a daughter (her name is not mentionned).
There is not mentionned a daughter in law (Schwiegertochter in German language).
The date mentionned is not the date of birth of Auguste or the deceased person.
It is the date when this message of his death was written.
I think this death notice was published in a newspaper.

In this context the word Mann is best translated as husband.

Just to clarify the date a little:

The notice is worded to show that Wilhelm died on 30th June, 1891 at 9 a.m.

The funeral will take place on Friday, 3rd July at 3 p.m.

Best regards,
Karen

I speak modern Dutch, not old German though I recognize the style of the announcement and most of the words. I wondered where the announcement was made (the word preceding the first date). The German town of Lärz is the best fit I could find on Google maps.

Good question, Mike!

I can't see anything over the "a" and the "L" is very different from the one at the beginning of "Leiden".

I thought it might be Harz (which would be a bit vague, but possible), but the "H" is nothing like the one at the beginning of "Heute".

I'm racking my brains... ???

UPDATE: Could it be GARZ (on the island of Rügen)?

@Judy:
As Graham mentioned, "Mann" = husband here (mein lieber guter Mann und Vater = my dear, good husband and father).

Even today, the Germans still write their notices in this way. At the top it might say that my wonderful, loving, hard-working husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather passed away. It's a bit confusing, when you see it for the first time! Below the text there may be a list of all the relevant names (i.e. the wife, the kids, the brother(s), the nephew(s) and the grandchild(ren)), or it may just be one name (usually the wife).

Best regards,
Karen

Me again.  ;D

If it was Garz/Rügen, your Wilhelm Diedrich may have been a ferryman on the island.

http://www.ruegen-mueller.de/Chronik.htm

In 1890, a Wilhelm Diedrich took over the ferry which ran between Cammin (on Rügen) to the Wittow peninsula. His predecessor, Joachim Radvan, had made so much money from it that he was able to employ a private tutor for his children.

(No more info than that on Wilhelm, I'm afraid.)

In the 1930s, an Alfred Diedrich was the ferryman. In 1939, he and his assistant were drowned when the ferry capsized.  :'(

Best regards,
Karen
