Uniform Identification.

Can I ask for some help to id this Irish ancestor's uniform?

Not Southern Ireland as the cap badge has a crown. Not Northern Ireland as they are British Army.
This looks 1940's -50's.
I'm not convinced it is Irish unless you know something you're not telling us.
Irish Regt's. including overseas tend to have a harp rather than a shamrock if that's what it's supposed to be.
Also the crown doesn't look right for it to be Commonwealth & neither does the cap which looks European.
Do you know who it is?

It is the Order of Malta of Ireland, sort of equivalent to the Red Cross.  Video here shows some members in that uniform.

The corps has its origins in the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, a Catholic lay order hence the crown and the emblem of Malta.  Google images of the Sovereign Order insignia to see the similarities in the crown and the cap badge.

I am grateful to you all fo!ks, these answers are very helpful,and give me something to research further. He was William Muldowney,1912,Dublin....he married Kathleen Wall in 1935, I am still researching his children...
